House explosion on city’s South Side
Firefighters are on the scene of a house explosion in the 800 block of Lock Avenue on the city’s South Side. Early word from investigators is that it was a gas explosion. Tuesday afternoon, Columbia Gas released this statement:
Based on the evidence, we believe there was a release of gas that was the result of alterations on the customer-owned gas line within the house beyond Columbia’s influence and jurisdiction. These alterations were not performed by Columbia Gas.
The explosion happened just before 10:30am.
Two people were injured. A 69-year-old man suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his arms and face. His 3-year-old great-granddaughter also suffered burns to her face. Both are now hospitalized.
The explosion is reminiscent of an incident out of Upper Arlington in March when a home blew up there. That blast was eventually attributed to issues with gas lines into the house. (jj)
