2016 shopping: A look at the candidates’ campaign stores

It costs a lot of money to run for president and most candidates are anxious to bring in the bucks. That’s why they meet with donors, hold $1000 / plate fundraisers and send countless emails begging for money. And don’t forget the swag. Many of the candidates have stores set up on their official campaign websites where the strongest of supporters can pick up trinkets and gear designed to show off who they favor in the coming election.

Do you like Ted Cruz? How about a $10 “this vehicle only makes right turns” Ted Cruz bumper sticker or a $40 Ted Cruz phone case? Favor Mike Huckabee? How about a $23 “I’m with Huck” t-shirt. (When did Mike Huckabee start going by ‘Huck?’) What about Bernie Sanders? You can grab five small “Bernie for President” stickers for $5. They’re described as being ‘perfect for sharing with friends and family.’ (Just what my grandma always wanted.) If it’s comfort that you’re looking for, Hillary Clinton would love to introduce you to woven throw pillows emblazoned with the message “A woman’s place is in the White House.” And you can have one for only $55.

So what does the latest entrant into the race…our own governor, have up for sale in his store? You can choose a button or bumper sticker with the “Kasich for Us” message for $5. You can get a hat for $25 (your choice of or red, white or navy). There are t-shirts in the same colors starting at $25. The most expensive item is a polo shirt (red or white) for $45. But my favorite item is the $20 coffee mug…available in navy or white. Mostly I liked seeing this item because it reminded that for the same money, I could have a night out at one of 25 different places for (614) Restaurant Week.

And in case you’re curious…Donald Trump doesn’t have a store on his website. Surprising, I know. You would think that he wouldn’t miss an opportunity to sell a bunch of junk with name on it. Oh, well.  (jj)
