(614) Reaction: ‘War on Christmas’ moves to Starbucks

starbucks-red-cup-controversy-today-tease-1-110915_b615137f78684740e43b0e5a00508841Family. Warmth. The joy of giving. These are just a few of the things that help to create the true feeling of the holidays. But of course the season wouldn’t be complete without a healthy dose of ‘War on Christmas’ anger.

Starbucks recently began use of its 2015 holiday cups. The cups are a solid Starbucks red with the company’s logo in the middle. Unlike seasonal cups in previous years, the new cups do not feature snowflakes, stars, tree branches or any other graphics.

In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs. This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories. In the nearly two decades since the first red Starbucks cup, the company has grown from 1,400 stores in a handful of countries to more than 23,000 stores in 68 markets around the world. Starbucks has become a place of sanctuary during the holidays. We’re embracing the simplicity and the quietness of it. It’s a more open way to usher in the holiday.

– Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks VP of Design & Content

Those who are voicing offense at the cups say that Starbucks is dissing Christmas. A protest campaign asks people going to Starbucks, when they’re asked their name at the counter, to say Merry Christmas to force baristas to write the holiday message on the cups.

A quick survey of Columbus social media showed only people making fun of the ‘controversy:’

Do people live that boring of a life that they need to complain about the Starbucks holiday cups? – @AHrenbo

I don’t care what the Starbucks cups look like as long as they are still filled with the stuff I’m addicted to. – @DKSB17

I think #Starbucks new holiday cups, with deep blood red, is promoting Vampires. All hail, Count Dracula! Xmas complainers, try2 feed poor! – @tombetti
