9/11 Memorial Stair Climb today at MAPFRE Stadium

This morning, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) is holding their Columbus 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Columbus Crew SC’s MAPFRE Stadium.

The goal of the organization is to remember and honor America’s fallen fire heroes and to provide resources to their survivor families (including college scholarships). The group also works through the fire service community to reduce the number of firefighter deaths and injuries each year.

The Memorial Stair Climb is an event that not only raises funds and awareness of NFFF, but also pays tribute to the firefighters that lost their lives in the terror attacks of September 11th, 2001. Climbers will step the equivalent of 110 stories, the height of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. Each participant will carry with them the name of a firefighter that died on 9-11.

The event begins with a moment of silence today at 8:46am…the time that American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the WTC.  The climb starts at 9:03am…the time that United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower.   (jj)
