The Clintonville Community Market has announced that this Friday will be its final day of operations. The Market said last month that it would be closing its doors after 17 years.

Hours this Friday are 11am to 7pm. All items, excluding alcohol, will be 30% off.  (jj)

A staple of the Clintonville area will soon close its doors for good.

The Clintonville Community Market has announced that it will cease operations by the end of October. The market first welcomed customers with its opening in 1998, offering local residents a wide selection of organic, local and natural products. Shoppers at the food co-op were treated to choices from local farmers and vendors and proved to be a success.

In a memo to market members, the board of CCM points to a changing marketplace as a major reason for a decline in sales in recent years. As more and more traditional chain supermarkets continue stocking and expanding organic and natural food offerings, the pool of shoppers became diluted. The market says that, as painful as it is, they’ve realized that shutting down is the right thing to do. In the notice to co-op members:

The ethical and responsible act is to close the store while we will be able to satisfy most, and hopefully all of our financial obligations…This was a very emotional and difficult decision, but it is the responsible action to take in order to insure all the employees, local suppliers, and other vendors that have supported us for many years will receive their final payments.

A meeting to further discuss the decision to close will be held September 30th at the Presbyterian Church on Tulane & Esmond.  (jj)
