Columbus named least-expensive city to insure a car
Consumer finance website NerdWallet recently conducted a survey comparing insurance costs for the most popular SUVs / crossovers, sedans and pickup trucks for the nation’s top 25 most populated cities. A few things that they learned may surprise you.
- Generally speaking, SUVs and crossovers cost less to insure than sedans and pickups.
- Toyotas very often cost more to insure than other vehicles.
- Sedans appear to be the costliest vehicles to insure.
Now here’s the great news. Columbus, Ohio ranked #1 in the survey as the city with the least expensive insurance premiums. It may not feel like it when you’re paying those premiums, but according to NerdWallet, it’s true. For example, of the vehicles surveyed, the Ford Escape was listed as the least-expensive to insure in Columbus with a premium of $860. By comparison, that same car costs $5027 to insure in Detroit. The Toyota Corolla lists at $1041 to insure in Columbus, but $5787 in Detroit.
Obviously, there are varying factors for the cost of insurance…things like driving history, various discounts, geography and policy variances. Still, it’s better to finish at the top of this list as opposed to the bottom. Tough break, Detroit. (jj)
