Drug to combat heroin overdose available at Short North pharmacy

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 9.06.26 AMThe Columbus Dispatch reports that AIDS Resource Center Ohio’s pharmacy in the Short North has now become the first pharmacy in Columbus to stock the overdose antidote drug naxolone (Narcan).

New Ohio laws now allow pharmacists to dispense the medication without a prescription. Primarily, naxalone is used in the event of a heroin (or some other opiate) overdose. Addicts and families of addicts may choose to keep the medication on-hand. The nasal variety sells at around $100 for two doses. Two doses of the auto-injector would cost around $600. Most insurances would likely help to cover the cost.

In addition to the Short North pharmacy, AIDS Resource Center Ohio’s Dayton pharmacy will also stock the drug. Only a handful of other dispensaries in the state will have it on-hand.  (jj)
