French term sends Hilliard student home from spelling bee
“Réchauffé” is a word of French origin. It means warmed-over as in “maybe we should have gotten take-out tonight because Karen’s meatloaf tastes réchauffé.”
Today, the word also meant ‘disappointment’ for one Hilliard 7th grader competing in the Scripps Howard Spelling Bee. Lipika Narisetti, 12, was among 49 contestants competing in the semi-finals of the national event.
The Hilliard Heritage Middle School student was considered to be a favorite to make the finals until the French term tripped her up. This was Lipika’s first trip to Washington for the event and with a little luck, she’ll be back. (jj)
Note: this year’s Scripps Howard Spelling Bee has two winners – the first time since 1962 there’s been co-champions. Vanya Shivashankar (13, Olathe, KS) and Gokul Venkatachalam (14, Chesterfield, MO). Vanya won with: scherenschnitte (def: art of cutting paper into decorative designs), while Gokul won with: nunatak (def: hill or mountain completely surrounded by glacial ice).
