Aisle 7: Baking needs, spices … vehicle registration

bmv-selfserviceThere’s a new product making its way onto local shelves. And it’s not what you’d expect. In what seems like an effort to be “part of the times,” the BMV has embraced technology and started putting self-service terminals in supermarkets in Columbus (and soon Cincinnati and Cleveland). It’s a pilot program that’ll run for a year with the goal of making renewal tags in one minute.

Last week, they installed the first one in Westerville at Marc’s Supermarket and two more will be put in at a second Marc’s and a Meijer. And while it’s great that the new service is quick, remember that you’ll have to pay an extra $3.50 for that efficiency. (deb)

Grocery list: Eggs, Milk, Vehicle Registration, Cereal

No one enjoys a trip to the BMV. (Why does that line never move?!?) Its one of those things that you try to avoid at all costs. The mail-in option for renewing your plates is one alternative. You can also renew online. And now a new pilot program may give you another option.

The Ohio Department of Public Safety will soon begin placing self-serve kiosks in select grocery stores in Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati. You should start seeing the machines in the next six to eight weeks. Consumers will be able to swipe their driver’s license and credit card and receive their new vehicle registration and stickers on the spot. If the program is successful, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles says that they will likely expand the program statewide.  (jj)
