It might be time to knit your phone a sweater
Cell phones can take quite a alot (see dropping it on the floor several times a day), but one thing that it can’t take? Super cold weather. Phones lose 20% of their battery life when temperatures hit freezing and as it drops below zero, phones can start shutting down.
Best Buy specialty sales manager Justin Kemper (speaking to WCCO’s Natalie Nyhus) said that phones work best at 70 degrees and that, “Basically batteries, when they get to zero degrees, the battery life will cut in half, go from 100 percent to 50 percent.” But while the phone might register as “dead”, it will (more than likely) start back up once it gets warm. She said that the quickest way to warm up your phone is to put in your pocket for about 30 min.
You may have winterized your house, but now its time to winterize your phone. And I for one, don’t want to know what Siri will do if she gets cold; I don’t think I can handle my smartphone lecturing me about proper winter weather safety tips. (deb)
Tips to help your phone maintain its battery:
- Turn on “Power Saving” mode (for Androids)
- Turn down screen brightness
- Turn off Bluetooth and WiFi
- Buy a battery pack case that recharges without a plug
