Komen Columbus adds new Race for the Cure…in Athens

A quick look at the tens of thousands of people who gather and participate each year for the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure provides just a hint as to how many people are touched by the event and the cause. Columbus’ Komen Race is the largest in the country and raises millions each year for breast cancer research and treatment. And when you have that kind of success, you just want it to keep building.

And with that, Komen Columbus is announcing the expansion of the Race for the Cure to Athens and Ohio University. Executive Director Katie Carter says that the organization is partnering with the OU School of Nursing to stage the first Athens Race for the Cure on Sunday, October 25th. The event will benefit programs in 18 counties in Southeastern Ohio: Athens, Vinton, Washington, Jackson, Morgan, Perry, Meigs, Gallia, Noble, Hocking, Scioto, Pike, Ross, Fairfield, Muskingum, Guernsey, Monroe and Lawrence.

Participation fee for the 5K or for the 1-mile family fun walk is $25 for adults, $20 for breast cancer survivors, $15 for students, $10 for children and $5 for babies. Komen and OU have set a fundraising goal of $50,000 for the event. My guess is that they will do much better than that.  (jj)
