Looks like Columbus won’t be getting a Lyft anytime soon

In February, Lyft (the ride sharing service) made its way into the Columbus market. But now the service is planning on suspending its Columbus operations starting Jan. 19.  Lyft sent a letter to its Columbus based drivers saying that they’ll be pausing service, mainly because of the regulations imposed by the city.

Full letter:

“For now, pausing operations in Columbus

As the Lyft community has grown in Columbus, we’ve encountered mounting legal pressure from local regulators. City officials have moved forward with onerous ridesharing requirements that essentially treat Lyft the same as a taxi. We are now forced to choose between endorsing rules that will make it exceedingly difficult for Lyft’s peer-to-peer model to thrive, or taking a stand for the right long-term path forward.

As of noon on Monday, Jan. 19, Lyft will pause Columbus operations.

While we fight to bring Lyft back to Columbus, we’d like to extend a special invitation for you to make money driving elsewhere for us.

Learn more about driving for Lyft in Cincinnati.

If we don’t hear from you by Jan. 19, your account will be deactivated.

We know this will affect you and the income you rely on. We understand this decision will place many drivers in a difficult position and hope having this information in advance of Jan. 19 will allow you to begin to plan for a pause in operations.

We’ll continue fighting for Lyft in Columbus, and we appreciate everything you’ve done to make this community a success.”
