Pencils down! Common Core testing begins

There might be snow, and snow days, but it’s also testing day. Today (Feb. 17), Ohio will be the first to administer one of the two English language arts and math tests based on Common Core standards. The exams have been making the news (even trending on Facebook) because they’re expected to be more difficult than the spring standardized state exam they replace.

Several parents have started an “opt out” for their kids, which means that their kids won’t be taking the exams. Many educators, like Hilliard school superintendent Dr. John Marschhausen, says the district will honor the requests of a handful of parents who have asked to have their children opt out of the new tests.

Guess today really is a good day for a snow day. (deb)
