Investigation on tear gas + pepper spray ordered for Cbus police

Columbus police Chief Kim Jacobs has ordered an internal investigation into the use of tear gas and pepper used by police on crowds near campus, who were celebrating OSU’s national championship victory. At a press conference, the chief said that police acted properly yesterday. But in an email sent out later, she noted that “conditions were difficult” after the game and that there is a need to address all concerns about possible misconduct.

Some are citing the numerous photos and videos (plus student accounts) of the police using tear gas and pepper spray as one the main motivators behind the internal investigation. (deb)

Riot Police use tear gas to break up Buckeye win celebrations

It’s no surprise that fires (like from couches and dumpsters) broke out late last night and early this morning as Columbus celebrated OSU’s national title win over Oregon. And early reports say that about 8,000 students forced their way into The Horseshoe stadium and tore down a goal post.

But around 1:15 a.m., riot police used tear gas to break up crowds in front of the Ohio Union (along N High St).  According to Columbus Dispatch, three cans of tear gas were used and police also used pepper spray on several people and several students forced their way into The Horseshoe stadium and tore down a goal post.
