Suicide Prevention Center established at Children’s Hospital

Screen Shot 2015-10-12 at 11.06.18 AMNationally, suicide is among the leading causes of death for young people between the ages of 10 and 19. Doctors and researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital are committing themselves to learn more and taking action. Children’s has just announced the launch of the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research.

Thirteen students died by suicide in Franklin County last year and seven families in our community have suffered child suicides in just the first six months of 2015. The establishment of this new center is evidence of our steadfast commitment to stopping this devastating trend.

– Dr. John Bernard, Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Part of the new center’s focus will be to examine the factors that make young people more likely to exhibit suicidal behavior. Those efforts will be used to better aid with prevention and treatment of at-risk youth.

Plans including implementing a program called Signs of Suicide (SOS) in middle and high schools. The goal will be to teach kids how to react if they notice warning signs in themselves or others.
