*UPDATE* Potato salad kickstarter guy gets kick’stopped,’ moves to Indiegogo

You may remember Zack Brown as the Columbus who guy who took to Kickstarter last year in an effort to raise $10 to make potato salad. What began as sort of a joke became a viral sensation. For a time, it was the hit of the internet and soon Zack was being talked about everywhere from the Huffington Post to Good Morning America. In the end, with donations having come in from all around the world, the crowdfunding effort to raise $10 for potato salad brought in more than $55,000. Zack made the potato salad as promised, and used a portion of the money to stage a ‘potato salad-themed’ event in downtown Columbus to benefit charities helping the homeless and the hungry.

That was in 2014. Now it’s 2015 and Zack is back.

This time around, the guy that likely will always be thought of by most as ‘the potato salad guy,’ wants to become ‘the Jet Ski guy.’ Zack was approved at the beginning of this week to go forward with a new Kickstarter effort in which he would grind an entire Jet Ski into powder and send out vials of it to backers. No…I’m totally serious.

The stated fundraising target was to be $3,900. For $50 donations, backers would be invited to Columbus to take a ride on the Jet Ski before it was turned into dust. Again…I’m totally serious.

Like I said, Kickstarter approved the campaign at the beginning of the week. But then the crowdfunding site abruptly changed it’s mind. A rep told Zack that the company was worried about “perception” and that they would not be approving his effort.

*Update* Brown has now launched his jet ski campaign on rival crowdfunder IndieGoGo.  (jj)
