Whole Foods grows with smaller stores

365_WF_Logo_COLORWhole Foods has announced plans for a new secondary chain of stores. The new outlets will be called ‘365,’ a tie-in to the retailer’s 365 Everday Value Brand. The new stores will be smaller operations featuring items with lower prices, including the 365 items. National brand items will be available as well. Whole Foods management says that they envision the new stores primarily attracting mid-week customers who want to get in and out quickly, but who save the bulk of their shopping for the weekend and the larger WF stores.

Co-CEO John Mackey describes the store look as a “streamlined, hip, cool technology oriented store, unlike any store anybody has ever seen before.” The plan is to open no more than ten 365 stores next year, with the potential then to open many more, perhaps as many 365s as there are Whole Foods. So far, no locations have been announced for the new chain.  (jj)
