Race track construction off to slow start at former Clippers site

The Columbus Clippers vacated Cooper Stadium and its West Mound Street site at the end of the 2008 baseball season. In 2012, it was announced that developers would convert the site into an 8.500-seat racetrack and automotive research center. Two years later, demolition work commenced, but since then, it appears that the most activity to happen at the site is when a portion of the parking lot was used to host a touring Cirque du Soleil show for a couple of weeks last year.

Word is that the project has run into various obstacles including an engineering issue involving storm drains and other slow-downs. Franklin County Commissioner  John O’Grady says that he recently met with developers and things appear to be getting back on course. Though progress seemed non-existent in 2015, O’Grady says that will change in the new year.

Once completed, the track is expected to host several motorsport events including motorcross, rallycross and off-road racing.
