Record 86,000 fans attend international soccer game

There’s no doubt Ohio Stadium is known for being a college football arena, but Wednesday night soccer fans showed up en masse for an International Champions Cup exhibition match between European powerhouses Real Madrid and Paris St. Germain.

Fans were captivated by the match, which ended in a 3-1 victory for Paris St. Germain over Real Madrid. They even sent an “O-H-I-O” chant around the stadium in the 55th minute of play.

As for the future of international soccer in Columbus? The outlook is good.

International Champions Cup vice president Kwame Bryan said he was “ecstatic” with the record 86,641 fan turnout–the largest number of people ever to watch a soccer game in Columbus.

“On a Wednesday, I don’t think you could ask for anything more. It’s an historic night in Columbus,” Bryan said. “I wouldn’t see why we wouldn’t talk about coming to Columbus in the near future.”

The historic match between Real Madrid, the most valuable sports team in the world, and Paris Saint-Germain goes down tonight at 7:30 in Ohio Stadium.

A true grass field has been be installed on top of the turf especially for the event, which you can see a time lapse of below.

Keep in mind that traffic will be just as bad as gameday around campus tonight, and it won’t be helped by the fact that tween idols Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas will be playing a concert at the nearby Schottenstein Center.
