Tuesday Tunes: Gelatinus Cube
For this week’s Tuesday Tunes, we talked with Columbus rock collective Gelatinus Cube, an ever-changing group of up to eleven guys who focus on varied instrumentation, noise, and improvisation to achieve their signature sound.
Following the release of their most recent album, “24 Hour Rock and Roll,” Gelatinus Cube played an extensive set at Worst Kept Secret Fest and performed live on the air at CD1025’s “Frontstage Live.”
The band’s next performance is this Friday at Brothers Drake for a Valentine’s Day party in drag.
In an email exchange yielding several one-word replies (and even fewer responses untouched by the band’s whacked-out sense of humor), very little was accomplished. But, here are some highlights anyway.
614NOW: Your most recent release, “24 Hour Rock and Roll,” is artistically compelling, but lo-fi and raw. What were you trying to express through writing it?
Gelatinus Cube: Being an adult is confusing and often times a bummer. At first it’s cool because you don’t have a bedtime and you can curse, but even that charm can grow dull.
614NOW: You’ve said in the past that you have a “revolving door policy” when it comes to band members. Is this still the case, or do you have a more permanent lineup now?
GC: We have made the decision to fire half the band. Each member will be assigned a number drawn out of a hat that correlates to a passage in the Bible. If the passage is from the new testament, that member gets fired. The remaining members will then put out a Craigslist ad for new members.
614NOW: What is next for Gelatinus Cube? Any upcoming records or shows?
GC: We are playing a Valentine’s Day drag show at Brothers Drake on February 12. If you are comfortable with it, come dressed in what society believes to be another gender’s designated clothing. Or however you’d like. After that we’re playing March 1st at Misfit Manor and March 4th at Rumba Café.
614NOW: Sometimes your music makes me feel happy, and other times it makes me feel sad. Are you doing this to me on purpose?
GC: Yes.
614NOW: Some people are scared by your music. Do you have anything to say to them?
GC: Everyone is out to get you.
