Friday: Drexel Theatre lights up the silver screen again

Following four months of renovations to the tune of $2.5 million, the historic Drexel Theatre in Bexley is reopening and lighting up its silver screens yet again.

The changes, repairs and improvements were extensive, including replacement of the neon tubing on the theatre’s signature sign, 410 new seats and new stage lighting and sound for community events.

All of the changes were made in accordance with the theatre’s 1930’s Art Deco design to keep the historic feel of the space alive.

After being placed on the National Register of Historic Places last June, the project earned a total of $500,000 in state and federal tax credits towards its restoration.

2/29/16: Bexley’s Drexel Theatre to close March 14 for renovations

The Drexel Theatre is about to undergo some major changes, according to the movie theatre’s website.

In a project estimated to cost $2.6 million, the marquee and signage will be restored, the entry lobby and the main lobby will be “beautified,” and the concessions counter will be replaced with another that is “complimentary to the Art Deco design.”

The Drexel has made a name for itself for being the artsy theatre that shows the independent films and foreign films films you can’t see anywhere else on the big screen.

Following the March 14 closure, the theatre is expected to have a reopening in about 12 weeks, landing some time in June.
