UPDATED: Bexley Lifts Ban on Pit Bulls

Update 11.17.2016 – This last Tuesday, Bexley voted to finally lift the ban on pit bull breed dogs within city limits, a ban that has been in place since 2012, according to NBC4i.

The pups will have to be spayed or neutered, registered with the city, and pass an obedience test.

Tuesday, the city of Bexley introduced an ordinance that would lift the ban on pit bulls in an effort to clear up confusion, according to Mayor Ben Kessler.

The proposal is being met with support, even from outside the city of Bexley —  John Tortorella, head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets fits perfectly into the kind of pit bull owner Bexley wants to attract.

According to NBC4i, Tortorella owns four pit bulls, and two of which were “dangerous” set to be euthanised. He rehabilitated them and now couldn’t be more proud.

“Now they’re just unbelievable family pets they’re part of the group of our family,” said Tortorella to NBC4i.

If the ordinance passes, residents of Bexley will need to do four things.

1.  Register any pit bull or dog with pit bull characteristics with the city.
2. Those dogs would have to be spayed or neutered.
3. An owner would be required to have physical fencing at their home.
4. Complete a standardized obedience test.

Still, council members have said it is far too early to initiate a vote.
