Newark, Ohio Decriminalizes Marijuana Possesion

Newark officially decriminalized possession of marijuana within city limits through an amendment to an ordinance Tuesday, according to NBC4i.

The “Sensible Newark” plan details that anyone caught with less than 200 grams of marijuana or paraphernalia related to it doesn’t face jail time or fines. Previously, the consequence for anyone caught with marijuana was up to 60 days in jail along with additional fines, according to NBC4i.

The East Central Ohio Decriminalization Initiative drew up a petition and worked to get just over 1,000 signatures to paste the issue onto the ballot. Changes only apply up to the city limits, so police will still continue to keep a close watch to make sure people follow rules and laws in other parts of the county.
