Ohio primary voters switched parties in droves
Over 5% of Ohioans who cast votes in the March primary election were previously registered for the opposite party, with the vast majority consisting of past Democrats choosing to vote Republican.
The polarizing factor is presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Some voters switched parties to vote for him, while others attempted to block his nomination by voting for Ohio Governor John Kasich.
Over three times as many people switched to the Republican party than to the Democratic party.
Take Mahoning County for example, where over 27 percent of Republican votes came from previously registered Democrats, compared with only one percent of Democratic votes coming from previously registered Republicans.
Right now it’s unclear whether the new Republicans will stick with the GOP when the general election arrives. It’s also unclear whether the majority of those who switched parties voted for or against Trump.
One thing is for sure: Ohio will be a battleground state come November.
