Primary roundup: Trump dominates, Sanders surprises Clinton
Yesterday’s round of primary elections yielded some interesting results–some expected, and some very surprising.
As for the expected, on the Republican side, Donald Trump dominated the polls once again. The businessman swept Hawaii, Michigan, and Mississippi, with Texas Senator Ted Cruz winning Idaho.
Ohio Governor John Kasich garnered a respectable 24% of the vote in Michigan, but ended up in third or fourth place in all four states. He is now shifting his focus to Ohio, which he maintains he can win.
On the Democratic side, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton defeated Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders by a whopping 66 points in Mississippi, cementing her lead in the south.
However, Sanders surprised Clinton big-time in Michigan, where he narrowly won after polls predicted Clinton would have a 23-point lead. The Sanders surge came as such a shock that pundits are calling it “the greatest polling error in primary history.”
So, while Trump remains clearly in front on the right, Sanders is injecting some spirited competition on the left.
Before the next big round of primaries on March 15, which includes key swing states Ohio and Florida, there will be a series of debates and speeches.
Sanders and Clinton are debating tonight in Miami, Florida, and might be coming to the Ohio State University for a CNN-hosted town hall on March 13, while the Republicans are debating on CNN tomorrow.
Franklin County’s early voting center is open until 7 p.m. all this week, so whichever side of the aisle you’re on, be sure to get out and vote!
