State democrats pursue economic agenda in spite of roadblocks

Among the economic priorities detailed by the democratic state legislature yesterday were raising the minimum wage; guaranteeing paid medical and family leave; creating an income tax deduction for higher-education tuition fees; and putting $1 billion of the state’s rainy-day fund towards a wide-ranging infrastructure project.

However, state democrats face serious obstacles between now and the passage of new legislation, namely a republican-controlled state legislature in a presidential election year.

“You need to drive issues that are important to people … until someone from the majority either decides to work on it with you, or the public puts so much pressure that it’s forced to pass,” Senate Minority Leader Joe Schiavoni told the Columbus Dispatch.

Pending a massive public outcry or a compromise (both of which seem equally unlikely in the current political atmosphere), don’t expect major legislation to move until a new congress and a new president is elected.
