Trump talks trade, jobs in Ohio

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump visited eastern Ohio last night to give a speech that focused largely on trade and jobs, but also touched on immigration.

Though he gave speeches from teleprompters earlier in the week, Trump spoke off-the-cuff for about 45 minutes to a crowd in St. Clairsville, beginning with a recap of the primary.

“We got the most number of votes in the history of the Republican primary system. And think about it, there were 17 people involved. There’s really, probably never been anything like that.”

Notably, he didn’t touch on his loss in Ohio to John Kasich.

He quickly shifted his focus to trade.

“Ohio has lost one-in-three manufacturing jobs since Bill Clinton signed an agreement to put China into the World Trade Organization–not good. He also signed NAFTA, which was a total disaster, right? NAFTA has done more to destroy your community than any other single act.”

Saying that Hillary Clinton was “watching over his shoulder” while he signed the trade agreement, he said that having another Clinton in the White House would be “disastrous.”

Instead, Trump proposed putting tariffs on goods imported to America in an effort to bolster American manufacturing and punish corporations that outsource jobs overseas.

On immigration, he seemed to shift his rhetoric from a “total and complete shutdown” on Muslim immigration to a stance of screening immigrants from areas with known terrorist groups, though his official stance is unclear.

His signature wall on the United States-Mexican border was a major talking point and a hit with the crowd, who chanted, “Build that wall, build that wall!”

Trump has received criticism for his comments from Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and various media outlets in the wake of his Ohio speech.

Though he didn’t give an exact date, he said he would be coming to Columbus “soon,” and he will be in Cleveland for the Republican National Convention July 18-21.
