Will Columbus Get Taller? Developers Fight Height Restrictions

High Street isn’t getting any longer, and the Short North is the place to be for the Columbus’ most desirable developments.

The city is already considering expanding the allowable height on High Street from 35 feet to 72 feet between fifth and Norwich Avenues, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

The city’s goal is to encourage denser development in areas that are more accessible by bus line.

The developers’ goal is to build taller and taller buildings, no restrictions, for the purpose of preparing for an expected urban population boom.

According to the Dispatch, commissioners and residents are concerned the taller buildings will affect any existing smaller buildings and could harm the look and feel of nearby neighborhoods like the Italian and Victorian Villages.

Developers have been asking the city to waive those restrictions for years, and have proposed to wave them seven times just this year.
