Dayton’s Wright State University was set to host the first presidential debate of the year on September 26, but as of this afternoon that’s no longer the case.
The university announced it would be withdrawing from the debate, citing expanding security costs and the inability to raise enough money to host the event, which could have cost over $8 million.
University president David Hopkins said the recent terror attacks in Nice, France prompted the security concerns.
“I wanted it so much for our students,” Hopkins said. “I hate this decision. It hurts my heart.”
