One dead after firefight with undercover officers
When two undercover Columbus police officers were cruising through South Linden as a part of this summer’s Community Safety Initiative, the officers spotted two men, one of whom was armed with a gun.
According to Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner, the undercover officers got out of their unmarked vehicle, identified themselves as officers by showing their badges, and asked the man to drop the gun.
Weiner said the man refused, pointed the gun at the officers, and fired.
The officers returned fire, striking the man several times. He was taken to Grant Medical Center, where he died about an hour after the shooting.
No officers were injured, according to Columbus Police.
Some Columbus residents were angry with the officers, decrying what was the second police-involved shooting in three days. They made their discontent clear, as it spread from South Linden to Grant Medical Center.
As of Tuesday morning, no names have been released.
