Police found bullet holes in two apartments and multiple vehicles early this morning when they were investigating reports of gunfire in the area of 1175 Windsor Avenue–and then an unknown gunman found them.

“Shots came from 12th and Gerald, little bit west of rifle fire,” said an officer on the police scanner.

“Nobody coming in here comes in here alone,” commanded another officer on the radio. “Stage out on Cleveland Avenue somewhere out there, do not come in alone.”

Police described the sound of the gunfire and bullets whizzing through the air as the kind coming from a powerful, high caliber rifle.

“There’s very different, distinct sound when you hear gunfire, and when you know you’re being shot at,” said Columbus police spokesperson Sgt. Rich Weiner. “It’s like a soft whistle. It’s the bullet cutting through the air. Very distinct sound. The officers felt their lives were in jeopardy.”

SWAT police and a helicopter were called in to search the area. According to police, a bullet and multiple shell casings were recovered by detectives.

No information on the suspect has been released and no injuries have been reported.
