MarShawn McCarrell, 23, took his own life at the top of the Statehouse steps on Monday evening.

High Street was shut down for a brief period afterwards while authorities were called to the scene to investigate a shooting.

Though no clear motive was determined, McCarrell posted a status on Facebook at 3 p.m. Monday that read, “My demons won today. I’m sorry.”

McCarrell was a community advocate who helped found the local organizations Pursuing Our Dreams and Feed The Streets, both of which seek to help the homeless and build community in Columbus.

McCarrell was the subject of a profile in 614 Magazine two years ago as a result of his efforts, and was awarded the NAACP Hometown Hero award last Friday.

A vigil open to the public will be held tonight at Dodge Park on 667 Sullivant Avenue.

His family also set up a legacy fund for those who wish to donate.

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, call the Franklin County Suicide Prevention Hotline at 614-221-5445.
