Deadly motorcycle crash closes I-70
Late Wednesday night a motorcyclist was killed when he attempted to pass between two cars on the dotted white line on I-70 East, closing the highway near Kelton Avenue and the I-70/I-71 split.
According to police, one motorcycle successfully passed between two vehicles in the far left lanes of the highway.
When a second motorcycle driven by 25-year-old John Matthews attempted the same, he clipped the left rear of one of the cars. He was ejected from his motorcycle and tumbled several hundred feet down the freeway before coming to rest next to the median wall.
Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police believe excessive speeds were a factor in the crash, and received calls from drivers reporting speeding motorcycles in the area prior to the crash.
