Scioto River revamp garners Columbus national award
Hopefully by now you’ve had the chance to walk along the reshaped riverbanks of the Scioto River, which ended last year with the completion of the Scioto Greenways downtown.
It looks great by all accounts, and now it’s received some national recognition.
The American Planning Association is awarding the restoration project with its National Planning Excellence Award for Implementation, lauding the city for transforming the Scioto from a motionless body of water to a free-flowing river with 179 acres of new park space.
In a press release Guy Worley, CEO of the Columbus Downtown Development Corp., said that the new river has helped to spur growth for downtown Columbus, calling the current state of downtown “a renaissance.”
Over $127 million in public and private funds have been invested in reshaping the river since the project began in 1998.
