‘Days of Rage’ protest fails to materialize

614now Staff

In short, last Friday’s “Days of Rage” protest rumored to take place in Goodale Park was a bust.

Though some protestors showed up, the result was no more than a few dozen people wandering around the park looking for one another.

Thankfully there was no violence in Columbus, but national tensions are still high following last weekend’s killing of three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and will probably remain high throughout this week’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

Whichever side of the political fence you sit on, stay safe, and remember the humanity of people on the other side.

7/14/16: Today: ‘Days of Rage’ protest could happen in Goodale Park

By now you’ve probably seen rumors of a “Days of Rage” protest to take place in Goodale Park today at 7 p.m., but many questions surround the event.

The event’s origin comes from a YouTube video uploaded by user “TheAnonMessage,” where graphic content of recent police shootings is spliced together with images of rowdy protests.

Accompanying the video is an extensive list of major cities and specific locations across the U.S. where protests will supposedly take place.

“Days of Rage” was allegedly started by “hacktivist” group Anonymous, but it’s unclear whether there’s any infrastructure behind the event, or if someone is hijacking an anonymous platform with name recognition to promote unrest.

The original video stresses nonviolence, but expect emotions to be running high, given the “Days of Rage” moniker.

Notably, the Facebook event has only about 50 people listed as “interested” or “attending,” as of Friday morning, so it’s unclear whether or not protestors will show en masse.

Some Facebook users seemed hesitant to rage out, instead expressing views of moderation in the comments section.

“I agree that peaceful protesting is a wonderful way to bring attention to issues with our government,” one commenter writes. “Please, don’t use this as a time for violence. I promise, despite what the media says, we’re listening. We always have been. We just don’t get airtime on television when we have a diplomatic and peaceful opinion.”

We’ll see what happens this evening, but for now, maybe plan on walking your Pekinese somewhere aside from Goodale Park.
