Unofficial Mirror Lake mascot, Afroduck, passes on
Truly a one of a kind waterfowl, Afroduck brought joy to the hearts of many a Buckeye through his sonorous quack, his well-pruned plumage, and his trademark tuft of feathers that earned him his namesake.
An unofficial school mascot of sorts, Afroduck swam about Mirror Lake doing… whatever it is ducks do.
When third-year Ohio State student Chelsea Hothem found Afroduck’s body, she sought to preserve his body–after posting a picture on Facebook, of course.
“We stuck him in our freezer,” Hothem told the Columbus Dispatch.
Hothem has plans to immortalize Afroduck through taxidermy, and to display the bird’s body among 20,000 other birds preserved at the Tetrapod Collection in OSU’s Museum of Biological Diversity.
A remembrance ceremony for Afroduck is set to take place on February 1 at Mirror Lake. Over 6,000 students have indicated interest on Facebook, possibly making him the most beloved bird in OSU history.
