WOW: Columbus awarded $50M Smart City grant

Back in March Columbus was named a finalist for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Smart City” program, designed to implement forward-thinking transportation systems.

It might have seemed like a long shot back then, but now it’s becoming a reality.

This morning it was announced that Columbus beat out the other finalists, and will be receiving $50 million in federal capital to fund the latest in transportation solutions, which will be matched by a whopping $90 million in local, private sector donations.

The capital city was chosen over Denver, Portland, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Missouri, San Francisco and Austin.

In Columbus’ application, two of the ideas put forth were the creation of a fleet of self-driving cars at Easton Town Center and public transit pass system that works across multiple forms of transportation.
