“Smile, you’re on camera!”
Not the words you’d expect at a traffic stop, but you might be hearing them before the end of 2016.
It was announced Wednesday that Columbus traffic cops would be among the first to be equipped with body cameras under a new proposal championed by Mayor Andrew Ginther.
The city of Columbus is currently soliciting contractors to make the cameras a reality, and could spend up to $10 million on police body cameras and servers to store data by 2018.
About 100 cameras are expected to be purchased by the end of the year, with another 1,575 coming between 2017 and 2018.
