Last week Mayor Andrew Ginther and Columbus Police began the 12th annual Community Safety Initiative, a program designed to improve safety through community policing and anti-violence initiatives.
The 13 week long program is ushered in as students Columbus City Schools enter their last day before summer vacation.
Police hope to find ways to interact and build trust in communities, and Mayor Ginther announced that recreation centers will have longer hours in the summer months.
Community members play a key role in ensuring safety, according to police. They say block watch meetings, community feedback and reporting any suspicious activity are all important.
