Things I Said When You Weren’t Paying Attention.

there may be electricity in my mouth
I want you to actually destroy my heart
I wonder if you see me
there was a small window of time when everything was fine
I like you better in the sunshine
I’m just gonna leave this right here

Coming down is the hardest thing.

I drove Finn to the park yesterday and Learning to Fly by Tom Petty came on the radio and I asked him to close his eyes and try and really listen to the song. He did. At the stoplight I looked at his face and it was earnest and beautiful. I told him that this song was popular when I was in High school and it was going to outlive us all. I told him I’ve been singing it forever. I told him that one day he would walk into a bar somewhere and it would be blasting and he would not be able to stop moving his head up and down just a little bit. Cuz that’s the way it goes. And that’s what our parents give us. Tiny shreds of the future. The past unraveled in little bits.

1:45 P.M.

I’m all up in three summer ales and Nina Simone is blaring out a boxy little window and my bathing suit top strings are all hanging down and it ain’t even 2pm yet and there is nothing that will stop me from telling you things. I love it when the sun licks at me just a little and the sky is a painting and there are people in this world who are not afraid. I think about your perfect passion and the way a whole bunch of days string together like lace. I wonder what you think about right before you go to sleep

A Snail Can Sleep for 3 Years.

I know what you feel like pressed against me.
A lion’s roar can be heard from five miles away.
I have no idea when I will forget everything.
It is impossible to lick your elbow.
I will probably always love you like this.

Like that

I loved you deliberately
like hot sauce
a punch to the face
one way tickets
grimaces

When I was a little girl I would always read the last page of a book.
I always wanted that singular sentence.
Because it was so sweet.

You are the last sentence of a novel that I wrote on the back of my brain.
