Cincinnati Zoo Twitter Deleted After Onslaught of Harambe Memes

In a year that saw the deaths of many beloved, famous musicians and cultural icons no one could have expected that a gorilla would resonant more with the internet.

Harambe, the gorilla, was shot earlier this year after a child fell into his enclosure. Since his death, the Cincinnati Zoo has been plagued with endless harassment, memes, songs, threats and other nasty comments in honor of Harambe. The Zoo has struggled to move past this incident and released a statement on Monday.

“We are not amused by the memes, petitions and signs about Harambe,” Thane Maynard, Cincinnati Zoo director, said by email. “Our zoo family is still healing, and the constant mention of Harambe makes moving forward more difficult for us. We are honoring Harambe by redoubling our gorilla conservation efforts and encouraging others to join us .”

All this has led to the discovery that the Zoo’s twitter account has gone dark, whether it was hacked or deleted – we’re not sure. We’ve reached out to the Zoo and are waiting on a response.
