Flea Bargain
A lot has changed in Columbus over the last four years.
What started back then as a low-key vintage swap in the parking lot of the Fireproof building- ya know, the place that now houses Tai Tiki, Chipotle, and a bank- has now blossomed into one of the most unique and flourishing events in the capital city.
Winter Flea, the latest in Nikki Portman’s seasonal “shop-up” events is a fascinating merging of local culture and commerce, not to mention a damn fine party even if your pockets are flat.
Have a drink and dance to spins from DJ George Brazil at the next event (at Strongwater Spirits, February 7), or pick up your next favorite item from these vendors, just a few of the 25-plus on hand:
Liminal Collective
Liminalcollective.etsy.com
If Liminal’s Etsy inventory is any indication- where you can find a vintage wine bottle shaped like an abstract cat, or just an awesome glass cheese plate with CHEESE written in a killer ’70s font- you’ll get a little bit of everything from their booth at the flea, including a diverse collection of mid-century modern pottery.
Paul Giovis Art
Have you found yourself marveling at the intricately detailed, vibrant panels on the wall at The Walrus downtown? Realized how hard it would be to pull one off the wall and take them home? Well now you can still have your very own Paul Giovis hanging in your home- but acquiring it the right way.
Abnormal Allies
abnormalallies.com
Sure, there are all kinds of apparel companies in the city, but none quite have the same personality as Abnormal Allies, a brand built out of a decade of collaborative art in Olde Towne East. Made in Columbus, representing authentic Columbus.
Ruhling
ruhlingwoven.com
From wall art to accessories to completely reconstructed garments,if you can dream it, Ruhling can weave it. Don’t be scared of fringe fashion, folks.
Honest Carry
honestcarrygoods.com
It’s not just the smell and the feel of leather that draws us- it’s the craftsmanship and care put into each and every item. True to their name, Honest Carry offers creative pieces like whiskey bottle sleeves to tobacco kits to apothecary bags.
Under Aurora
underaurora.net
Perhaps nothing better represents the Flea spirit than the plant-based fragrances and skin care products from Under Aurora. Who doesn’t want to get a brief reminder of the world’s empowered women while moisturizing?
Yellowood Designs
yellowooddesign.com
These aren’t your grandfather;s axes-but they are inspired by one. Committed to restoring axes while maintaining the history of the tools, a piece from Yellowood would be the ultimate impulse buy. And, it would ensure you get to your car safely.
Winter Flea will be held February 7 at Strongwater Food & Spirits (401 W Town St.). For more, visit columbusflea.wordpress.com.
