Heads up: Poisonous plant invades Ohio

The latest leafy menace to hit Ohio looks innocuous, but the burns and blisters its sap can cause are anything but.

It’s called “Wild Parsnip,” and its attractive yellow flowers are now in bloom all across the Midwest.

According to wildlife experts, the plant can lay you up if the sap gets on your skin and is exposed to sunlight.

Though some might be more sensitive to the sap than others, you might not be in harm’s way if you merely brush up against the plant during a hike. But if you try to remove or cut the plant without proper equipment and skin coverage, you could be in trouble.

Keep an eye out for the plant (pictured above), and be sure to tell children to stay away if you see one.

The best defense against wild parsnip is to wear long pants and shirts during hikes, but if you do come into contact with its sap, you’re recommended to wash the affected area immediately.
