New Billy Ireland exhibit takes on satire of immigration

Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum exhibition of the month is as influential now as it was over 100 years ago. LOOKING BACKWARD, LOOKING FORWARD features cartoon work around immigration. One artist highlighted is Joseph Keppler whose humorous weekly, Puck, played an influencer in future in satirical sketches. The pieces take a look at the politics and satire surrounding immigration policies of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and how these can still be seen today. The exhibit includes artist from Thomas Nast to Gene Luen Yang.

“In examining the past, it aims to inform the current debate, as we move forward with a story that is fundamental to the American experiment itself,” says the exhibit’s webpage.

LOOKING BACKWARD, LOOKING FORWARD runs from now until April 15 and features also, cartoon couture— a look at fashion with cartoons throughout history.
