Wex to host live documentary with Kronos Quartet
Creative Content & PR Manager for the Wexner Center for the Arts by day, film fanatic by night [/su_testimonial]
Sam Green earned an Oscar nomination for directing the 2002 documentary The Weather Underground. It’s available for streaming in lots of places, but you won’t see his more recent work on Netflix anytime soon. It has to be experienced in the moment.
The filmmaker’s been working in a “live documentary” format, combining a mesmerizing mix of images with his own, in-person narration and live musical accompaniment by bands like Brooklyn’s The Quavers and indie rock legends Yo La Tengo. The approach unites the immersion of cinema with the energy and spontaneity of a concert.
For his latest project, A Thousand Thoughts, coming Thursday, January 25 at 8 p.m. to the Wexner Center for the Arts, the soundtrack artists become the subject.
San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet has spent the past four decades challenging traditional ideas of a string quartet, with a repertoire ranging from 20th-century classical composers to Jimi Hendrix. The list of heavy hitters they’ve partnered and played with includes David Bowie and Patti Smith. For one night only at the Wex, Green will tell their amazing story as the quartet plays along.
The work was developed with support from a Wexner Center Artist Residency Award and it’s coming to Columbus hot on the heels of its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Tickets and more info are available here.
