Kasich Concerned About College Debt, Hunkers Down on “Tuition Freeze”
During a speech at the Ohio Newspaper Association annual conference on Wednesday, Gov. John Kasich brought up a student debt and the future of colleges.
“How long do you think in the 21st century here — with the way our kids and grandkids gather information — how much longer do you think kids are going to want to pay $60,000, or whatever it is for some of these schools, a year to go to college. They can get the same college education provided online.” Kasich said.
Part of Kasich’s proposed budget plan included continuing his tuition freeze for all public universities in the state, which for many students coming into a 2018 freshman class, could be a small bit of relief. According to research by The Wall Street Journal, the current generation of millennials have at least one source of long-term debt outstanding, this includes student loans, a mortgage or car payments — while 30% have more than one outstanding debt.
“Not only do millennials carry debt, but they struggle with it. A majority report having too much debt, difficulty in making payments, and worries about it. Specifically, the ability to pay off student loans troubles more than half of millennials who have such loans.” The Experts write in The WSJ article.
