Ohio’s 20 Week Abortion Ban Takes Effect

Ohio’s new law banning abortions after 20 weeks takes effect today amid anti-abortion activists assertion that it limits women’s health care choices.

So far, there have been no challenges in court for the law but protests are scheduled to put pressure on legislators.

The basis for the 20-week ban is that fetuses feel pain after that 20 week gestation period which opponents claim is scientifically unfounded.

The law was the compromise after the House GOP pushed a controversial “Heartbeat Bill” that ultimately failed after major opposition on both sides of the aisle.

The Dayton Daily News reports that since Kasich became governor in 2011, there have been 18 restrictions placed on the practice of abortion and the medical procedure has steadily declined since 2000.
