Columbus’s 2017 Homicide Total At An All-Time High

Following an investigation of a death on Christmas, the Columbus Division of Police has ruled the investigation as a homicide; raising the total number of homicides in 2017 from 139 to 140. Previously, the most homicides in one year was in 1991 during the widespread of crack and cocaine when the city investigated 139 deaths, according to a report from the Columbus Dispatch.

Last year, Columbus’s police force investigated 91 homicides in the city. That number is up 35 percent in 2017.

With only a few days standing between the new year, this alarming number is a reminder of how absolutely tragic it is to lose a loved one. Our hearts and thoughts go out with the 140 families impacted by these tragedies.
