ACLU defends C-bus School District employee’s homophobic comment on Facebook

Chris Dodds has been identified as the person behind the threatening, homophobic comment made on the Columbus Pride Parade and Festival’s Facebook page. Dodds works as the Columbus City School District’s garage assistant supervisor. Columbus City Schools said his termination was pending but now, he’s got American Civil Liberties Union on his side.

One person with ACLU believes his comment was awful but also protected by free speech and therefore should not be fired for posting it.

Elizabeth Burnham told WCBE that it’s not fair to only censor things we don’t like. She doesn’t think the answer to hateful speech is to suppress it but rather, to fight it with educational speech.
