Local dogs aren’t covering mouths, spreading puppy flu
Hide your hounds, hide your pups because we could be on the cusp of a canine influenza outbreak.
The PetSmart in east Columbus has confirmed two cases of the virus and reported multiple dogs experiencing respiratory illness. One case was confirmed October 10, the other on October 13.
PetSmart released this statement:
“We immediately implemented a protocol to help keep pets safe and healthy that included: a stop on new reservations for the PetsHotel and Doggie Day Camp; implementation of a rigorous disinfecting process throughout the store; and outreach to all pet parents with pets that may have been exposed.”
There haven’t been any doggie flu cases reported since. It’s highly contagious among pooches so as a precautionary, take your dog to the vet if they show any of the following symptoms:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Variable fever
- Thick, greenish nasal discharge
- Difficulty breathing
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargic
